Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Second wave of responses for our
Lady in Red campaign

Here are the voting results as of March 5, 2008:

Thumbs Up – 60%
Thumbs Down – 40%

The following comments are typical of the feedback we received. Judge for yourself what is sublime – and what is just plain ridiculous.

“it's all part of the "cheeky" Svengali experience”

The ad is doing its job - i.e. grabbing your attention, using a gorgeous model, dressed and posed seductively, with a hilarious, over the top headline! It's a very creative, avant garde approach which does not offend me in the slightest. It's all part of the "cheeky" Svengali experience, which is always light-hearted fun as well as a fabulous hairstyle. It's true, I get told an amazing number of times that people love my hair and I frequently get asked who my stylist is (Shiraz, of course!)

My whole family goes to Svengali and recently Kara and Olga, assisted by Claire, did marvellous hairstyles at my daughter's wedding, for 9 people, all of whom were absolutely thrilled by their beautiful hairstyles and the wonderfully relaxing and jovial staff, which added to the joy of this very special day. I am a 60 year old retired kindergarten teacher and if I'm not offended I don't think others ought to be either. My advice: try it, you'll LOVE it! Congratulations Shiraz and staff!

“unladylike, crude and useless”

Are you trying to sell a service or merely titillate? The web page where the woman has her feet pointing to the left is even more objectionable because you tossed in a free look at one of her boobs. Just as I never cared for the “art” photos of Leibowitz, so also I think spread legs are acceptable in cases of childbirthing, not in spa ads. They are unladylike, crude and useless for enticing customers. Make sure someone else is in on your choices for future ads, especially when you are offering a genuine service, not a “massage parlour” front.

“Rock on!”

It's a fantastic and tastefully done picture. If people have issues with it they are far too uptight and should seek to find themselves a life. Rock on Shiraz!

“simply TERRIBLE”

I’m only 32 years old (female)… so I am quite open and modern, but I must say that this ad is SOO NOT NECESSARY. It is a ridiculous ad to run if you are trying to promote a hair salon. It’s simply TERRIBLE. Get rid of it, it ruins the image you people are trying to make. It looks like she is ready to masturbate. UGH…

“sex sells”

If I come out looking like the sexy woman in red following a Svengali treatment, then I'm in!! We all know sex sells! Thumbs way, way up!! Keep running those ads! Guaranteed the women will be running to Svengali Salon!!

“not objectionable”

It’s not objectionable but it may not be what you were trying to portray?

“no good”

No, it doesn’t seem that important. In marketing sex sells, but in this case it does no one any good.

“tarnishes your image”

Tarnishes your classy image, it’s like having a fine caberent (sic) with processed cheese

“gorgeous hair”

I see an attractive woman with gorgeous hair and great earrings!

“provocative…objectionable”

A lovely women, but a provocative and objectionable pose for a mainstream company/newspaper to show. If your goal was to tarnish your image, you've succeeded.

“seductive and classy”

A seductive and classy eye-catcher. The reader's interpretation is based on their own mindset. I see more walking in the malls!

“offensive…not appropriate”

I am so glad to see that someone else got to you about the ad. Mainstreaming of pornographic images is offensive, and says something about the business that promotes them. There has been a lot of research done about mainstreaming of pornographic images and its impact on young women and men. A women sitting with her legs open and her hand in a position that suggests masturbation is not appropriate. Personally it does not attract me to your salon.

“Politically correct”

“Tell the politically correct to stuff it and get a real life”

“tasteless…sensationalism”

Tasteless, slutty and I wouldn't even step into your "salon" after seeing this. Interesting how you used negative feedback to create a second run at sensationalism by running the ad again!

“closed minded people. Shame”

If she was 800lbs., I bet no one would have complained. It’s just that she happens to be attractive that closed minded people would see something perverted. Shame.

“Beautiful, attractive….extremely inappropriate”

The model is beautiful, attractive, and possibly very sweet. However, the pose is extremely inappropriate. The human body should never be used to entice. It should be given dignity and respect. Thanks.

“will hurt your image”

The concept is not creative and the Viagra tie in will hurt your image and business, not help it !!

“Very sexy”

A very sexy women in a artful pose anytime.

“treat women as objects”

The pose is similar to strip club advertisements which treat women as objects and of lesser value than men

Thumbs up – and down

As a male, thumbs up. As a father of 7&3-year-old girls, thumbs down.

“She’s hot!”

I like it. She's hot!

“Far too provocative”

This is far too provocative for a family newspaper ad. What is the centre of attention here and what are you selling?
